ABOUT

The Kajukenbo Tum Pai Association (KTPA) exists to unify, preserve, and advance the Kajukenbo Tum Pai Branch as a collective body. The Association is founded on the principle that the shared strength of the Tum Pai Branch surpasses that of any individual method or practitioner. Through unity, the Association seeks to connect past and present Black Belts in friendship, continued learning, and stewardship of the art.

The Association is committed to preserving what makes Kajukenbo Tum Pai distinct, while ensuring future generations may continue to explore, innovate, and build upon its foundation.

Purpose and Mission

The Kajukenbo Tum Pai Association serves as the global registry for Kajukenbo Tum Pai Black Belts and functions as the representative body for the Kajukenbo Tum Pai Branch. Its core purposes include:

  • Preserving and publishing the Official Kajukenbo Tum Pai Branch Family Tree

  • Coordinating official events, workshops, and gatherings for the benefit of members

  • Providing formal channels for communication, grievances, and suggestions

  • Strengthening representation of Tum Pai within the greater Kajukenbo community

  • Recognizing and acknowledging credentials without awarding rank

  • Supporting unity while respecting the autonomy of other Tum Pai expressions

The Association makes no claims upon other Tum Pai branches and affirms mutual respect and support for all Tum Pai practitioners within Kajukenbo.

Organizational Structure

The Kajukenbo Tum Pai Association operates as Kajukenbo Tum Pai Association LLC, formed in 2011. It is governed by a Board of Officers and supported by a Board of Advisors, with oversight focused on transparency, lineage preservation, and organizational continuity.

What Is Kajukenbo?

Kajukenbo is a hybrid martial art founded in Hawai‘i in the late 1940s, combining Karate (KA), Judo/Jujitsu (JU), Kenpo (KEN), and Boxing (BO). It emphasizes real-world self-defense, adaptability, and seamless integration of striking, grappling, and weapons defense. Kajukenbo is defined by its practicality, personal development philosophy, and continual evolution.

What Is Kajukenbo Tum Pai?

Kajukenbo Tum Pai is a recognized branch of Kajukenbo emphasizing soft, circular movement, internal mechanics, and close-range combat. Drawing inspiration from internal martial arts such as Tai Chi, Tum Pai balances hard and soft principles through breathing methods, sensitivity training, and meditative forms.

The branch emphasizes longevity, health, harmony, and mindfulness while maintaining the street realism and effectiveness central to Kajukenbo. Tum Pai training is accessible to practitioners of all ages and experience levels.

Bailey / Heuer Method

The Kajukenbo Tum Pai Branch, as represented by the KTPA, is specific to the Bailey/Heuer Method, guided by SGM Doug Bailey and SGM Bob Heuer. This designation is documented in the Official Family Tree and Charter.

  • Support for all Tum Pai brothers and sisters across Kajukenbo

  • Continued growth through training, scholarship, and community

History of Tum Pai

  • 1963 – The original Tum Pai concept was conceived by Sijo Adriano D. Emperado, GGM Al Dela Cruz, and GGM Al Dacascos as the next evolutionary step of Kajukenbo

  • 1966 – The original Tum Pai concept was decommissioned with the creation of Chuan Fa

  • 1971 – GM Jon Loren taught Northern Kajukenbo in the Pacific Northwest, incorporating Tai Chi

  • 1976 – Sijo Emperado authorized GM Loren to resurrect the Tum Pai name with a new mandate: a soft-style, close-range Kajukenbo branch

  • 1979–1983 – GM Loren and senior Black Belts revised Kajukenbo forms and techniques using Tai Chi principles, tendon structure, and internal mechanics

  • 1983 – GM Bob Heuer demonstrated these developments to Sijo Emperado, who endorsed Tum Pai as the fourth official branch of Kajukenbo

  • 1994 – GM Doug Bailey and GM Bob Heuer petitioned GM Loren and the International Kajukenbo Association (IKA) to recognize Kajukenbo Tum Pai as a distinct style of Tum Pai; the petition was sanctioned
