Laster’s father initially enrolled her in a martial arts school in Niles, California, because he wanted her to develop confidence and learn how to defend herself. After several years, he became dissatisfied with the cost and the quality of instruction being provided. He began searching for another school that would offer her more practical and meaningful training.
At the recommendation of his former Gung Fu instructor, Laster’s father took her to Island Style Kajukenbo in Fremont. Following an introductory meeting with the school, he enrolled her in 2019, when she was 11 years old.
Laster quickly discovered that Kajukenbo was physically and mentally demanding. With the guidance of GM Bob Gomez and the other Island Style Kajukenbo instructors, she continued pushing through the challenges. Her training gave her greater confidence in her ability to protect herself and improved her awareness of potentially dangerous situations.
Beyond physical self-defense, Laster learned that Kajukenbo training requires practitioners to confront their fears, weaknesses, and reactions when placed under stress. She credits the instructors and students of Island Style Kajukenbo for their continued support and for sharing their knowledge throughout her journey.
History
Sibak Jailynn Laster joined Island Style Kajukenbo in 2019 at the age of 11. She trained under GM Bob Gomez, Sibak Bruce Kavich, Sibak Nain Guzman, Sibak Robert Blaine, and Sibak Yen Dinh.
Through dedication, perseverance, and continued training, she earned her first-degree black belt on April 11, 2026.
