Whats Sijo thinking?
« on: May 13, 2012, 07:11:09 PM »
That was one of my favorite things to ask Sijo when were sitting around.
Sometimes he would just give you that look and raise his eyebrow, LOL, and you knew what he was thinking. And sometimes he would come up with the last thing you would expect.
We miss you Sijo, you were rare in many ways.
Mahalo for who you were, from the jokes to the stink eye.

The reason I started this post was to bring up the good memories we all have of those in kajukenbo that left an impression on you.
I thought it might be good to have a fun positive post to share with each other.
So feel free to share.

So no body has any memories of their Grandmaster or teacher to share?
I have quite a few but don?t want to be a hog about it.
Just post a photo or short comment of a good memory to share with us.
Maybe I should change the heading to
(Kajukenbo, the positive side)

It was 1984 and the school we had at the time was a huge warehouse that we rented as our training facility.  We hosted a seminar where Sijo, GM Jon Loren, GM Dacascos, GM Vargas, Sifu Bill Owens, and around 300 Kajukenbo people attended.  Sijo was literally strutting around showing technique with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face.  He was blasting people and they were loving it.  I remember how lively Sijo was and how happy he was to be there.  It was at this event that myself and 3 others received a promotion to brown belt.  The 4 of us were high as a kite being promoted by Sijo.  As per tradition the 4 of us that were promoted took Sijo and the above mentioned GMs out to a Chinese restaurant in downtown Portland.  During dinner everyone of course was talking story and Sijo told the 4 of us to always keep an open mind and learn all we can and keep the hard hitting tradition alive.  I remember after dinner walking around downtown Portland thinking how safe and cool I felt with Sijo and all these GMs walking with us.  I wasn?t the only one who kind of was hoping someone would mess with our group.  Anyway it was a great memory for sure.

Cheers!

I remember being in a car with Sijo. Early 80's. He was visiting Montreal after his bypass operation. Someone was asking about finger pokes and he picked up a beer can that had some how fallen empty to the floor. Canada had not yet started producing beer in aluminum cans yet, this was one of the the older steel ones. Without loosing a beat he blasted two holes in the side of it with his index finger with two quick pokes as if it was a screw driver. Then he shut everyone up by saying that we were going to be practicing this technique the next day at the seminar. We walked on egg shells wondering what was going to happen. We eventually got a short lecture on starting with hard foam and working towards other materials and doing finger tip push ups.

He loved doing that, pushing people's buttons to get a reaction then watching the fallout.

I remember back in 2004 when Sijo had come to stay with me for a couple of weeks.
how surprised Sijo was when we had a BBQ in Visalia for my birthday.
I think there were about 150 Kajukenbo people there.
It started out at about 35 people for a backyard BBQ and then the word got out that Sijo was coming.
Sijo said Wow look at all these people that come for your birthday.
I laughed and said yeah Sijo we know who they came to see.
That day was one for the books at the Kajupit.
Thanks to all of you who made it possible.

PS
THAT WAS GOOD OHANA THAY DAY
