"Lost" footage of Sijo??
« on: August 03, 2011, 03:33:59 PM »
I just found this eBay listing.  It states that the DVD contains 1957 footage of Sijo Emperado.  It states that this footage had been lost since the '50's.  Just wondering if anyone knows anything of this.

Well the Chow footage was probably taken off of my website.  One clip is the property of GM Sedeno, and the other is the property of GM Hart.
From the still photo in the add, the "1957" footage looks like a copy of GGM Gaylords 1962 videos that are on You Tube:

When I asked Sijo about old films from Palama Settlement, he said there wasn't any.  When I told him Ed Parker said he visited the Palama school and shot some 8mm film, Sijo just laughed.  He said Parker did come to film, but he wouldn't allow any filming of their workouts.  So he left without any film.

Prof. Bishop, in that youtube video at 0:19, there is a punch&squat motion used to move from standing to training horse stance.  My club uses that move in both basics and some kata/dances.   Do you know the source of this movement?  Was is part of Prof. Chow's program?

I not sure, but I would think it was Sijo's invention.  I've trained with some Kara-ho people, and never seen that transition into horse stance that we use in Kajukenbo.

Thanks.  BTW, good vids of you on YouTube.   Are those released in full resolution on a DVD or something like that?  If not, you should.

I've seen that punch & squat in cha-3 too, so must be something from the origins of kajukenbo. In Tom Mitose's kosho ryu they do it also with a slight variation, but we all know he borrows most of his material from his training under Halbuna  ;D

Back in the early 70's, when I first strarted training under the CHA-3, this was was one of the first things besides enduring pain, that Professor Marino Tiwanak (Pops) & Chief Al Tejero (Chief) taught me. It was called & the command was "squatting position or Kenpo squat". My black belts, schools, & students to this day, still practice & carry on this tradition.

Thanks, Tony.  Both of our teachers trained under Prof. Sam Brown.  Though, to my understanding, no one from Prof. Brown and on is now considered to be CHA3, despite our respect for our CHA3 roots.  All of Prof. Richard Lewis's clubs do the "squat" to this day.

You are correct, we are techinally no longer with the CHA3 organization.  However, we still do the the Squat out as well it is one of the first things we learn as whell as it is incoporated in both Stationary and Moving Death Dance.
