Teacher's Tribute
(Paying Monthly Money)

It is the responsibility of each teacher to set the example of paying tribute to their lineage senior teachers. This traditional example of helping to take care of their teachers as a life-long obligation is paramount to the foundation of the school and the strength of their martial ethical standard of a teacher.

Tribute

Tribute is seen as our life-long obligation to the art we study. It is a life-long endeavor. Tribute is paying money each month to your teacher and their teachers as a responsibility to their well-being for they have given you their art as a father to a son or daughter. Our obligation is to always honor this commitment to help uphold the family no matter how small your contribution is. It is not just one time or more, but every month. It is also our way of staying in touch monthly as our lives evolve into its many paths. Regardless of which path we take in life, whether it be martial arts or a carpenter, etc., the obligation still holds if your martial art is lifetime blood. It is the fabric of internal Gung-Fu's ethical and traditional standards.

Here is what the Tum Pai Association does as tribute to the seniors of our lineage. This is our own example, but any lineage could make their own formula up. This does not count student-teacher monthly percentage that is agreed upon for satellite schools.

(In Gung-Fu or Tai Chi)

Full-Time Blackbelts (Sashes) (Who teach) - $25.00 per month

Part-Time Blackbelts (Part-time teacher) - $15.00 per month

To Your Teacher's Teacher's Teacher's Teacher

Most lineages have had some of their senior teachers pass away, which in our case would be Prof. Joseph Clarke and Augung Tony Ramos. As an Association, it can elect to give their tribute to whoever is left in the lineage or keep to their traditional scale. On a personal level I have paid monthly tribute to all of my teachers for over 35 years including my original teacher, Sifu J. Weong. I have done this to set an example which I have never deviated from. Besides traditional ethics, seeing teachers who have dedicated their lives to teaching and are poor or living in poverty is a crime to us. Even five dollars a month from all of the teachers that they have certified in their lifetime would help them in their senior years. Tribute is important as a family and is the fabric of caring responsibility in students who make it to Black belt (sash). If this is not a tradition in your lineage, start it. This is the fabric of love and respect.
