I live in Tucson, Arizona and there are a few schools here that teach Kajukenbo. I do not know there reputation and that is why I am writing. Any recommendations out there?

I studied in Oakland, Ca at Hand to Hand with Colleen Gragen (Gaylord style) for about a year awhile ago and want to get back into it. I also studied Kung Fu before that for about a year and a half.

Thanks for any insights.

I just joined the site and I know this post is old, but if you are still in Tucson and would like to train I would recomend going to Gregory Tombias's School near the corner of 1st street and Ft Lowell.  Sei Ryu Kan Dojo, 502 E. Fort Lowell Road, Tucson, AZ  85705.

I trained under Sifu Richard Barfield, Chief Instructor Steve Kantaonemi (sorry if misspelled) Ramos Method.

I got to green belt, when I left the school.  I am trying to get a hold of Sifu Richard and get some information about my passing my green belt test.  I have started with a new instructor here in Sacramento, CA.  Unfortunately, my belts and certificates have been lost because of my ex-wife destroying my personal
items.

I am starting to workout with Sifu Ken Papavist in Sacramento, CA.

Can someone get me information on Sifu Richard, so I can validate my level of training.
Regards,
Scott

Hello, my name's Arden Yundt.  I've been training for around six months, attaining the rank of Yellow under Sigung Kenneth Johnson in La Grande, Oregon.  His school, La grande Karate and Kung Fu, practices Gaylord Method.  I recently moved to Minneapolis for college and I'm hoping to continue my training.  Gaylord Method and/or a focus on self-defense is preferred, but I'll take anything Kajukenbo really.  Any help or information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Arden

Greetings Brian, I trained under Grandmaster Sid Asuncion in Hawaii. Sid taught us in the event that you must use physical confrontation, 1) DONT GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK. 2) DONT STICK AROUND TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.. If you have to use your art, use it and be gone. I have used the Art and never been in trouble with the law thanks to Sid's teachings. In todays world, it would probably behoove you to have knowledge of a good criminal defence attorney also, just in case you need them. I personally feel I have an obligation to defend not only myself but any defenceless  person being subjected to unneccassary violence... just a personal view, take it for whatever its worth. In 1996 I saw a story on the news in Sacramento. A 76 year old Japanese man was beaten to death at the Del Paso Light Rail Station in Sacramento, Ca by three young criminals for the money in his pockets, during rush hour while a large crowd watched.
This was less than a half mile from my house. I was outraged. In my estimation there was not a man in that crowd. Had I been there I assure you that would not have happened. If we are unwilling to defend the innocent what value is our training??? William A. Roark
William Arthur Roark Jr.   Brown Belt under Grand Master Sid Asuncion in the Art of Kenkabo I have had the privelidge of meeting Grand Master Rick Kingi, Grand Master Al Dela Cruz, Grand Master Emil Bautista.

Thank you Brother, and thank you for your service to our country. When did you study under GM Sid? When I was studying Vernan Taylor was Sids top black belt still practicing under Sid. Vernan was a quiet kind of guy who loved to listen if you wanted to talk story. He had an easy smile Sid always said that was Vernan's give away, if he started smiling a lot for no reason it was because he was about to let someone have it. I've seen Vernan in action he was a leathal warrior. Vernan worked as a life guard at the beach on Nas Barbers Pt. when I was first stationed there in the spring of 1983. I was a young Hale Boy straight from the mainland and I had a difficult time understanding Vernan sometimes because I was still learning to understand pigeon. Had it not been for training with the local boys I never would have learned pigeon at all, lol. Once you became a student of Sids, you were treated as ohana immediately. I felt so priveledged to have that experience. It is still hard for me to imagine that I trained under one of the Greatest MA instructors in the world and he only charged us $15.00 a month. The greatest times in my life were spent at Sids house eating pupus and drinking coors after training. those moments are forever burned into my memories. Fraternally, William Roark

Never had the priviledge to study under him. Study under Professor Kainoa Li currently and whenever I was here with 25th Infantry back in the early and mid nineties had the opportunity to train with late gm iversen and professor li together. gm asuncion has many great gms that come from him and we consider all of them older brothers.
