Title: Who was Kajukenbo's first woman black belt?
Post by: Mitch Powell on January 13, 2004, 04:39:05 PM
Mariano Tiwanak was Sijo's first black belt. Who was the first female black belt under the Kajukenbo or  kenpo-karate banner?

That would be interesting to find out.  If you have Mitose's book "What is Self Defense" there is a group picture that is mis-identified as being Mitose's "Official Self Defense Club".  It is actually William Chow's school at the Nuuanu Y.M.C.A.  where Mitose was visiting to promote Dr. Arthur Keave to black belt.
The woman pictured in the group with a scarf covering her hair is "Auntie Liz", Elizabeth Chun.  Some have said that she was Prof. Chow's first female black belt, and others have said that she actually received her black belt from Sijo.  Gotta ask Sijo which account is true.

After checking with GM Davis he says it was either Lily Urquidez or Joyce Davis. ;)

We are unsure of when Lily received her belt it was around the same time as Joyce Davis maybe before or maybe after. Joyce Davis received her black belt in 1972.

Lily Urquidez comes from Billy Ryusaki whose instructor was John Leoning.

Joyce Davis comes from GM Joe Davis whose instructor was GM Aleju Reyes.

Back to the drawing board. ;)

Okay here is my final final choice for Kajus 1st woman black belt:

Malia Ribiero who received her black belt in 1971 from GM Al Dacascos whose instructor was GM Sid Asuncion.

I'm going to say the first 3 were:
1. Malia Ribiero
2. Joyce Davis
3. Lily Urquidez

The first Samoan female? ??? I take a stab at this too - Me. ;)

I just read Sixto Ramos' bio and he states his wife Ruth received her black belt from Sid Asuncion in the 1960s if I'm understanding his post right.

Good Afternoon Prof. Powell:

I read the bio from what I gather is that she recieved her black belt from Sid Asuncion but I don't recall a verification in the date. ::) I too had to read it a few times.

Now, just to make things interesting for us. On the family tress it states Ruth Ramos received her black belt from Sixto Ramos the tree is dated 2003. Therefore that would put her closer to the 70's or not? I guess it would depend on how long it took to receive a black belt.

I looked at the tree again last night and noticed a person by the name of Sandy Sandoval under Prof. Richard Peralta. Is Sandy Sandoval a woman or a man? Does anyone know?

Aloha all,
Just got off the phone with G.M. Sixto.

Professor Luka (Ruth) recieved her black belt from G.M. Sid in 1973.It was an 11 year journey. but..........

Linda Demasilio (sp?) recieved her black belt from G.M. Sid in..... 1964!

Also Professor Luka was the top womens fighter during that time. There was only one womens division so all belts fought each other.

 Aloha, Danze

Hi Sibak Daniel:

Thank you for calling GM Ramos. ;D Wow, so Linda Dismisillo has a very good chance of being the first women black belt. ;D 1964! :o

Is Linda Dismisillo still active is she too a Prof?

So now that we have answered that question.
All we need to know now is if Sandy Sandoval is a male or female?

Before you know it we will have found the first five women black belts of our system. ;D

Well done Sibak! ;D Happy New Year to you. My best regards to GM and your school.

Daniel,
Can you get a confirmation on the spelling of Linda Demasilio's name? At 1964, she clearly looks like the first female black belt in Kajukenbo.

Now, when did Asuncion create Kenkabo? She may have received her rank in that versus Kajukenbo. Can we clear that up?

I believe Sandy Sandoval was a man. Double check with KSDSTX or B Vickers, both are from Professor Peralta's school. I have a old tree of Professor Peralta's black belts if anyone is interested, should be in big family tree also.

Kenkabo was founded in 1965.

So that would mean she received her black belt in Kajukenbo. Right?

Jessie I emailed Sifu Vickers yesterday to ask about Sandy Sandoval. Thank you.

Yes, looks real good for Linda Dismisillo.  ;D

It's possible she was promoted in Kenkabo prior to it becoming an offical style. Since she was promoted so close to the time Kenkabo was established we need to find a source closer to the Kenkabo people.
